South Dakota Legalizes Sports Betting in Deadwood

The governor of South Dakota, Kristi Noem, has authorized a law permitting individuals to wager on sporting events in Deadwood. This is the sole location within the state where gambling is permitted.

Those wishing to engage in sports betting will need to visit a casino in Deadwood and register personally. Subsequently, they can place bets on their mobile devices while present at the casino.

The legislation mandates a $2,000 fee for casinos to obtain a license and an annual renewal fee of $2,000. The bill does not specify the tax rate casinos will be subject to or the number of licenses to be issued. The South Dakota Gaming Commission will oversee the smooth operation of the process.
